Wenger looks to bring Toffees man to the Emirates as a Gunner is picked up on the Villa Park radar.
Arsenal have made an inquiry for Everton’s Phil Jagielka as they intensify their search for a centre half.
Manager Arsene Wenger has been impressed by the England international who came back strongly last season from a cruciate ligament injury but Everton do not want to sell.
He joined from Sheffield United for £4m in 2007 and has been a pivotal figure in Everton’s improvement since.
Wenger, who is also keen on Everton’s Steven Pienaar, needs two defenders. He will lose William Gallas and sees Sol Campbell as a squad player.
The Frenchman made an improved offer for Lorient’s Laurent Koscielny last Sunday but is still waiting to hear if the £8.2m bid was successful.
Wenger is also interested in Fenerbahce’s Andre Santos and Pape Diakhate of Dynamo Moscow.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa and Valencia are interested in Arsenal striker Eduardo.

I rate Jagielka but I think Everton will do their best to hang on to the centre back and the host of other players they appear to be on the verge of losing. The 27 year old has been out for some time with injury but came back towards the end of last term and looked near his best. Do we need a defender? Yes we do but I would imagine the England man would cost in the region of £16m and Wenger may feel he can get a cheaper younger option elsewhere. The likes of PSG defender Mamadou Sakho spring to mind and whilst I would like to see us sign established players I think in many ways buying from within the Premier League ends up costing far more than going out to the continent.
Eduardo does appear to be falling down the Emirates pecking order, which is a shame. He hasn’t quite hit the highs at the club but is still a lethal finisher when he puts his mind to it. Can’t see him joining another English side so even if we were trying to offload the Croatian I would imagine a move to Spain more likely.
Which brings us to Joe Cole. The will he/won’t he saga continues. I hope we do nab him but it seems that any deal will have to wait until after the World Cup. A move to Manchester United may also tempt the Chelsea man but I don’t see him moving to Upton Park which is another supposed potential destination for the England attacker.
