Is this man set to anger Old Trafford and Anfield outfits with huge cash offers for their prized assets?
REAL Madrid are ready to offer a staggering £110m for England pair Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney.
The Spanish giants are preparing another summer spending splurge with Rooney and Gerrard top of their list.
Bernabeu president Florentino Perez is obsessed with signing Rooney and is willing to offer the same £80m to Manchester United for the striker as they paid out for Cristiano Ronaldo. And the club will also use Ronaldo to try and help lure Rooney to Spain.
It is not the first time that Rooney has been linked with Real. But now they are ready to test United’s resolve given the mountain of debt at Old Trafford.
New boss Jose Mourinho had a meeting with director general Jorge Valdano yesterday, and Real’s transfer strategy has now been agreed.
Mourinho made it clear his No.1 target is Liverpool skipper Gerrard, who he tried to sign twice before while he was Chelsea boss.
The 30-year-old has refused to talk about his future while he is at the World Cup, but the time it is taking to re- place Anfield boss Rafa Benitez has left Gerrard considering his future.
Mourinho is happy to spend at least £30m on the England captain, and the offers will be made as soon as England exit the World Cup. (Daily Star)
OK lets say for arguments sake that the Daily Star haven’t just created this out of thin air, what is the likelihood that either deal would be done?
Well the idea that Wayne Rooney would leave Old Trafford seems absurd to me. Maybe years down the line the England striker may consider his options but I can also see the 24 year old remaining at Man United for the rest of his career. Regardless of how much cash is on the table Sir Alex Ferguson would never accept and the Glazers, although clearly not averse to angering the clubs fans, are not about to accept deals for the clubs prized asset.
Steven Gerrard on the other hand may be a more realistic target. Things are looking decidedly uncertain at Anfield. No manager in place after a shocking season and a club in serious debt. Although a one club man the Liverpool man may feel that now is the time to move on unless the Tom Hicks and George Gillett show their intentions by bringing in an earth shattering managerial replacement and promise him loads of cash to invest in the fairly average squad then maybe things would get better.
What does seem certain is the likelihood that Jose Mourinho will want to bring in his own players and not be stuck with Manuel Pellegrini’s purchases and that may see the former Chelsea boss look to the Premier League for top notch additions although it seems to make sense that he may try first to raid the San Siro to bring some of his former charges to the Bernabeu.
