Birmingham are targeting Robbie Keane after missing out on Italian hot-shot Fabrizio Miccoli.

Brum had agreed a £5million deal to sign tricky diminutive striker Miccoli from Palermo on a four-year deal.

But the forward decided to remain with his Sicilian club, where he is skipper, and ambitious Premier League City have already started chasing other options.

Boss Alex McLeish, whose side finish ninth last term, wants a prolific forward to play off new 6ft 8in target man Nikola Zigic.

And Tottenham marksman Keane, 29, surplus to requirements at the north London club, now tops their wish-list.

Keane is out of favour with Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who loaned him to Celtic earlier this year.

Redknapp wants to offload Keane to raise funds to bolster his squad who have qualified for the Champions League.

Midlands neighbours Aston Villa also fancy the Republic of Ireland forward.

But City have already commissioned an agent to do the deal and have stolen a march on their Second City rivals, who must sell to buy.

Birmingham have splashed owner Carson Yeung’s cash by signing Zigic from Valencia and Ben Foster from Manchester United for around £6m apiece. (Daily Mirror)

After Alex McLeish’s side excelled last term its good to see the midland’s side pick up some real quality players. A year ago the idea that Birmingham City could pick up Serbian international Nikola Zigic and England man Ben Foster would have been unheard of but that top half Premier League finish makes such moves possible.

Can they get Robbie Keane? Well it wouldn’t be impossible but I can see Robbie opting for a move to either Aston Villa or Celtic but that isn’t to say that either move is in any way an improvement on a move to St Andrews’.

The Tottenham man does however seem very likely to have played his last game of his second stint at Tottenham as Harry Redknapp clearly sees the Irishman as well down the White Hart Lane pecking order.
