Is this Rangers man really an Emirates target or is it just a figment of his agents warped mind?
Arsenal are being linked with a shock move for Algerian defender Madjid Bougherra.
The Rangers centre back was outstanding against England at the World Cup on Friday night, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger watching on from the stands.
Frenchman Wenger was linked with the 27-year-old at the start of this month, admitting his admiration for the when assessing England’s World Cup opponents.
“I know the youngster Ryad Boudebouz, who is a very good player. There is also Madjid Bougherra who plays at Rangers — I rate him too.”
His individual performance against Wayne Rooney will have done nothing to deter the Gunners chief, who is keen to make defensive signings as Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre head for the Emirates exit door.
Bougherra had brief Premier League experience with Charlton Athletic, and has also played for Crewe Alexandra and Sheffield Wednesday in England.
A £5 million bid would be needed to take the French-born defender away from Ibrox, and the player’s agent has hinted that a move could be round the corner. Arsenal are the reported favourites, according to the Daily Express. (Give Me Football)
Whilst there is no doubt that Rangers centre back Madjid Bougherra is a decent player he is surely not good enough to be on Arsene Wenger’s ever growing list of summer transfer targets, is he? The 27 year old Algerian international has been at Ibrox for two years now and has come away with two SPL titles since his spells at Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday.
The towering no nonsense defender is something of a cult hero in the blue half of Glasgow but it just seems to me he has only been linked with a move to the Emirates due to his presence at the World Cup, during which time he hasn’t exactly shone. His agent may well be attempting to use the media in order to get his client a better deal because it just doesn’t seem plausible that Wenger is looking at this deal at all.
Clearly Arsenal need a new centre back or two with William Gallas and Mikel Silvestre on their way out and the likes of Lorient man Laurent Koscienly, Neven Subotic and many many others. The Gunners boss has stated that he is looking to bring in defensive reinforcements very soon but I am pretty sure that will not include the Bougherra.
