June 21, 2010 - Cape Town, South Africa - epa02214195 Raul Meireles (R) of Portugal scores the 1-0 lead against goalkeeper Ri Myong Guk (L) and Pak Chol Jin (C) of North Korea during the FIFA World Cup 2010 group G preliminary round match between Portugal and North Korea at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, 21 June 2010.

Manchester United are rumoured to be interested in Porto’s talented midfielder Raul Meireles and Sir Alex Ferguson may look to make a summer move for the Portuguese international if he can find the necessary cash for a bid.

The 27 year old has been in fine form at the World Cup and has garnered a great deal of interest and after six years at the Estádio do Dragão he could be ready for a new challenge. The £12m rated former Boavista man is in many ways two types of player in one. He has the tackling ability of a defensive midfielder but also has excellent distribution skills and is adept at pulling out a pin point pass.

One would imagine that after winning all there is to win in terms of Portuguese domestic competitions that Meireles would jump at the chance of a move to the Premier League. No doubt Ferguson can always get a recommendation from his former assistant Carlos Queiroz who is now the national team coach.

Clearly Man United are not averse to picking up players from the Portuguese league having already brought in the likes of Anderson, Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo in recent years.
