Reports in Holland suggest that Manchester United are preparing a move for Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a long term replacement for veteran goalie Edwin Van der Sar. The 27 year old has been in fine form for his country at the World Cup and may well be tempted by a move to the Premier League side.

Having sold Ben Foster and seemingly not overly confident in the ability of Thomas Kuszczak to be his number one, Ferguson has been linked with a myriad of successors to Van der Sar’s position as the club’s first choice keeper. The likes of Manuel Neuer and Artur Boruc have been strongly linked with a move to Man United but now it appears that the 6ft 4in Haarlem born keeper is a new favourite to fill the position.

Stekelenburg has been at Ajax since the age of 15 but may feel now is the right time for a new challenge having seen his side come painfully close to clinching the Eredivisie title last term only to lose out to FC Twente on the last day of the season.

Martin Jol will not be keen on losing the services of such a reliable custodian but if a move is made for the £10m rated goalie then the Amsterdam club may find it hard to keep the player from having his head turned.
