Ferguson very keen on bringing Belgian to Old Trafford.
Sport.co.uk understands that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is leading the race to sign Belgian international Steven Defour, however Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City have been confirmed as monitoring the situation.
Defour has been courted by the Premier League’s elite for the last 2 years, however the player’s representative Paul Stefani informed Sport.co.uk that Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is leading the pursuit of the player while Carlo Ancelotti, Roy Hodgson, and Roberto Mancini are keeping tabs on the situation.
The Belgian international who has 24 caps for his country is still recovering from the horrific injury with Defour unlikely to move until he regains full fitness from the leg break. Defour’s agent Stefani explained the situation to Sport.co.uk in an exclusive interview:
“Sir Alex is always interested in Steven (Defour) ever since he sent him the letter when he was struggling with injury. He is interested but we have to wait for an offer to be validated.
“At the moment he is not 100% because of his long term injury, and now he has to work on recovering from this.”
Stefani was then asked if Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea were monitoring the player’s situation:
“Yes, they are interested, but many clubs are interested, from Spain, Italy, and Germany. To say that tomorrow he will go to England is not right. There is always interest and every wants to play in the Premier League because it is a very big competition. But, I think we will have to wait until he is a 100 % fit, not 85%.” (Sport.co.uk)
Sir Alex Ferguson has long since been an admirer of Steven Defour and the closer the Belgian midfielder nears full fitness the nearer he may come to an Old Trafford move. The 22 year old is a quality performer who is sure to leave the fairly average confines of the Belgian league soon enough and he would appear to be just the type of player that Manchester United may well be after.
In many ways two types of midfielder in one, Defour knows how to get stuck in and can get his fair share of goals and makes things happen and in that way he has been likened to a young Paul Scholes, albeit with the ability to get the ball first before the man when attempting to win back possession.
Standard Liege may well look to cash in on the youngster before he gets any nearer the end of his contract and he is valued at around £13.5m and is said to be fairly near a comeback so perhaps if he regains full fitness before the transfer window comes to an end Ferguson may well look to follow up his interest in the tigerish performer with a bid.
