Anfield outfit apparently close to signing AC Milan man in a Dutch international exchange deal.
AC Milan striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar is reportedly close to joining Liverpool according to speculation in Italy.
The prolific Holland international was yesterday seen at Manchester airport amid rumours the former Real Madrid striker was holding talks with Manchester City, Manchester United and indeed Roy Hodgson. Last January the striker was strongly linked with a move to North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, with Arsene Wenger openly expressing his admiration for the archetypal number nine; however the media in Italy differ from their English counterparts and intimate the main intent is currently coming from Merseyside.
Today, Italian daily Il Corriere dello Sport suggest Liverpool have in fact jumped ahead of their Premier League rivals Everton rather than United or City in the race for the 26-year-old.
The newspaper claims AC Milan are pressing for Ryan Babel to be included in the deal, but it also suggests the former PSV and Ajax star has been earmarked as a potential successor to Fernando Torres, who is yet to commit his future to the club.
Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri recently suggested the player could leave the club this summer and quotes attributed to the new San Siro chief in Corriere dello Sport gave very little away.
He said: “Huntelaar, for now, is a Milan player,” (Sport.co.uk)
According to some sources this story has legs. Roy Hodgson is apparently frantically searching for new attacking options and if he happened to snare Klaas-Jan Huntelaar then he will have done very well indeed. The Dutch international has had a couple of average years but has not been as much of a failure at Real Madrid and AC Milan as some would have you believe.
If Hodgson has to use Ryan Babel as part of any deal to snap up the £16m rated former Ajax man then I am sure the new Anfield boss won’t think twice about it. The signs are that the new San Siro boss isn’t looking too keen on the 26 year old former and he could be on his way out once again.
The rangy forward could be well suited to a move to the Premier League and could allso prove to be a decent foil to play alongside Fernando Torres. Having secured Joe Cole and Danny Wilson and looking likely to add Albert Riera to the departures of Yossi Benayoun and Emiliano Insua it seems that Hodgson is a man on a mission.
Would Liverpool fans welcome a move for Huntelaar and if so is losing Babel in any deal an added bonus or something that Hodgson should think twice about?
