A statement is due at some point today confirming Cesc Fabregas is staying at Arsenal, if reports in this morning’s media are to be believed.

A number of national newspapers and TV stations are carrying the story that the Gunners will release their statement after Fabregas had a lengthy meeting with Arsene Wenger at the club’s Hertfordshire training HQ yesterday.

The World Cup winner was among the Arsenal players that took part in an open training session at the Emirates Stadium watched by some 7,000 fans – and he also took his place in the Gunners’ official new team photo.

The Arsenal captain will have been heartened by the reception he got from the crowd when his name was read out – the fans cheered and there were chants of “we’ve got Cesc Fabregas”. Clearly all the summer’s transfer talk has not damaged his standing with the Emirates faithful.

Wenger will hope that this will draw a line under a summer of speculation which has consistently seen Fabregas linked with a move to Barcelona, with his star player now 1.3 on Betfair to stay put. (Betfair Football)

It seems that Arsenal have managed to avert the loss of their captain this summer. The north London club have expertly dealt with the unsettling, and at times immoral, manner in which Barcelona have attempted to lure Cesc Fabregas to the Nou Camp.

The Gunners made it clear from the get go that they had no intention of selling their prized possession and therefore left no room for negotiations which angered the Catalan club but ultimately appears to have prevented their captain from leaving to re-join the La Liga giants.

It will be interesting to see the statement that is due to be released today that confirms that the Spaniard is indeed staying at the Emirates and one wonders if the Arsenal fans will have to go through this whole damn thing all over again next summer or perhaps even in January?!
