Emirates boss launches mega bid for Anfield keeper.
ARSENAL have launched a stunning £23million raid for Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina.
Arsene Wenger sees the Kop star as the man to solve his problem position.
And the Gunners boss is prepared to go up to £25m to land the Spaniard.
But Wenger knows he faces a massive battle to lure one of Liverpool’s prize assets away from Anfield. He had been eyeing Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer but the chance of getting Reina, 27, is far more mouth-watering.
Reina, a £6million buy from Villarreal five years ago, signed a new six-year deal at Liverpool in April.
He missed Thursday’s Europa League win over Rabotnicki after only returning to training on Monday – together with the rest of the club’s Spanish and Dutch World Cup stars.
Wenger is desperate to sign a top keeper after both Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski copped a stream of criticism for a series of clangers over the past 12 months.
But Liverpool insist they do not want – or need – to sell any of their big stars.
And the prospect of new ownership bringing a huge cash injection to Anfield leaves Wenger with a major fight on his hands. (The Sun)
This is not the first time that Arsene Wenger has been linked with a move for Liverpool’s Spanish international keeper but it seems that now the north London club is ready to bid big for the consistent Anfield keeper. The Arsenal manager is a man on a mission to avoid having to count on either Manuel Almunia or Lukasz Fabianski, two goalies who clearly ship to many goals due to bungling errors.
The Gunners are looking for a solid goalie that can help solidify a back line that could do with a safe pair of hands behind them. It does however seem highly unlikely that the Merseyside outfit would allow the former Villarreal man to leave but if the 27 year old did push for a move then who knows what might happen next.
Arsenal have two good up and coming alternatives in Vito Mannone and Wojciech Szczesny but neither is ready to be drafted in as the first choice at the Emirates and if the club did put in a bid as high as £25 then that goes to show just how importantly the club needs a new custodian.
Having failed to convince Fulham to sell veteran Mark Schwarzer, Wenger has then been linked with a myriad of other top keepers but Pepe Reina would be the pick of the bunch. During his five years at the club he has become one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League.
