Emirates boss sets sights on Montpellier duo.
Arsenal scout Giles Grimandi watched Montpellier pair Emir Spahic and Mapou Mbiwa-Yanga in action last weekend, according to L’Equipe.
The duo performed impressively as the hosts dispatched Jean Tigana’s side 1-0. With the Gunners scratching for defensive numbers after the exits of Mikael Silvestre, Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Philippe Senderos the players could be set for a move.

Firstly let me state that it is clearly obvious that Arsene Wenger has an excellent record of plucking players out of relative obscurity and making them into household names. Its something he does done with aplomb throughout his managerial career. However that being said there appears to be a certain amount of irritation relating to the perceived unwillingness the Arsenal boss has for forking out relatively large sums for established names.
This summer however it has been reported that the Gunners boss failed with decent sized bids for the likes of Phil Jagielka and narrowly missed out on persuading German international centre back Per Mertesacker to come and join the north London club.
Now however many sources are claiming that Wenger may be looking to launch a double raid on over achieving Ligue 1 side Montpellier. The players concerned are by no means unheard of but they are not the kind of players you would usually associate with a side looking to get back into the Premier League title hunt.
Moves for Emir Spahic seemed to have been going on for a couple of weeks with the Bosnian international skipper making it very obvious he would like to make the move to England. The second player is 21 year old full back Mapou Yanga-M’Biwa who is a French Under 21 international. Both players helped take their newly promoted side to fifth spot last term and have started this season with a bang, beating the champions of 2008/09, Bordeaux, in their opening fixture.
The pair are rumoured to be valued in the region of £16m as a pair but would a move for these two really instil much more confidence to a side with an uncharacteristically threadbare defence?
