Old Trafford boss interested in Bayer Leverkusen keeper.
Manchester United are considering making a last ditch bid for German international keeper Rene Adler as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a long term replacement for veteran Edwin van der Sar. The 25 year old Bayer Leverkusen missed out on a place in the Joachim Low’s World Cup squad due to a rib injury but is considered one of the best keepers in Europe today.
Having been at his current Bundesliga side for the past ten years Adler may well be keen on a new challenge, not least because his side missed out on a Champions League spot and appear no nearer to forging a realistic domestic title challenge.
Sir Alex seems to have little confidence in Thomas Kuszczak as a potential first choice goalie and England man Ben Foster left for Birmingham City, leaving the Old Trafford club no nearer to a custodian for the future. Ferguson is known to be an admirer of the Leipzig born 6ft 3in goalie and was linked with a move for his services last summer.
Adler may feel he has to move in order to improve his chances of wrenching the German national team jersey after seeing Schalke man Manuel Neuer take his spot for the recent friendly with Denmark. Valued at around £12m he could prove to be the answer to United’s long term keeping dilemma.
