Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Owen Hargreaves is on the verge of giving him a selection poser if he continues to impress in training.
The 29-year-old has not started a Premier League game for two years having been sidelined with chronic tendinitis in both knees.
Hargreaves returned to training at United’s Carrington base after his latest round of treatment with renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman.
And his performances have left the Red Devils chief pleasantly surprised.
“Owen Hargreaves has come back training, he trained yesterday with the first team,” Ferguson told MUTV.
“He looked very good. I was surprised how good he was looking. It’s an extra string to our bow.
“Bringing him in at this time, after being out for so long, obviously we’ll have to monitor him and see how he’s going to progress in the next few weeks.
“But it’s good to see him back. Because he’s been out for so long you have to see whether there’s going to be a relapse.
“That’s the first thing on our mind at the moment but having watched him in training yesterday if he continues that way he’s going to give me another selection problem, no question about that.”
Meanwhile, another positive on the injury front for United is that midfielder Michael Carrick is back in training following an injection to treat his Achilles problem. (Sky Sports)
This is great news for Manchester United and Owen Hargreaves. He has been sorely missed by United over the last few seasons and will provide the team with an extra midfield option if he can stay fit.
The news of Hargreaves’ return to training will also alert England manager Fabio Capello, who is a known admirer of the defensive midfielder. If he can get a run of games in a Manchester United shirt, it is more than likely that he will soon return to the England fold.
Here’s to hoping that Hargreaves can stay fit.
