Liverpool are preparing a move to sign Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor in January. The former England Under 21 international has had something of an injury nightmare of late and is on the St James’ Park transfer list and will find it hard to displace Chris Hughton’s current centre back pairing of Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson when he returns from being sidelined.
The 24 year old has been at the Magpies since he was 16 and was seemingly untouchable at the heart of the Toon Army defence before a combination of knee and shoulder injuries took their toll. Roy Hodgson is looking to bring some more youthful options to Anfield and is known to be a big fan of the powerful no nonsense defender.
Taylor’s contract will run out in the summer and would then be able to leave the north-east club for nothing but the Liverpool manager is looking to make a move for the player in January to avoid losing out to prospective suitors when the season comes to a close.
A move in the region of £4m may be enough to persuade Hughton to cash in on a player who managed 162 starts since his debut for the club back in March 2004.
