Cesc Fabregas has confirmed that Real Madrid did try to sign him in the summer.

The Arsenal captain was pursued by Spanish champions Barcelona throughout the transfer window, but has now revealed that Barca’s great rivals Real Madrid were also interested in signing him.

He is reported in Spanish newspaper Marca as saying: “It’s hard to say who showed more interest in me, Barca or Real Madrid. I am lucky that the two clubs have asked about me and that’s very important – that does not happen every day.”

The Gunners’ skipper also spoke of his sadness at not being able to join his boyhood club Barcelona, but insisted he is happy at Arsenal and just wants to win trophies with the club. “We tried for the summer but in the end could not be. In my head I thought it might have happened. It was a very good opportunity for me but here [at Arsenal] I have everything, just need to win titles,” he said.

“I was always very happy when I was in the Barca youth ranks and when I went it is clear that saddened me. In the future I do not know what will happen. Playing in Barcelona is a dream I’ve had since I was very young.” (Mirror Football)

Will the Cesc Fabregas speculation ever stop?

Probably not until he eventually leaves Arsenal. It is surprising to hear that Real Madrid’s interest was genuine, after various rumours throughout the summer that they were rivalling Barcelona for the Arsenal captain’s signature.

Fabregas has made it clear that he wants to return to his boyhood club Barcelona, and it is likely that the move will go through at the end of the current season. Arsene Wenger did all that he could to hang on to his star player for another year, but it seems inevitable that despite his love for Arsenal, Fabregas’ desire to return to the Nou Camp is just too strong.
