Now there are plenty of people wishing to shove Arsene Wenger’s face into a humble pie over this nasty challenge from Arsenal man Jack Wilshere that resulted in the midfielder being sent off at the Emirates yesterday. Yes the tackle was bad, probably a red card, but it’s not in the same league as some offences that have occurred this season. It wasn’t two footed and in fact the contact only occurred at the final moments of a rash, but not malicious, challenge from the England teenager.
Many will get carried away over this challenge to help deflect attention away from other incidents, Sam Allardyce will probably say something about ‘perception’ and people will vilify Wilshere’s challenge and blow it all out of proportion. A bad tackle is a bad tackle, and these happen week after week. However let’s try to be a little balanced.
There are bad tackles and there are deliberate attempts to inflict injury on a player and this was the former not the later. Oh and by the way Marouane Chamakh did indeed dive for the penalty but he was fouled, not sure what the referee should have done about that. He could have given a spot kick but then book the Moroccan for simulation? Being a referee has never been harder!
