He currently plays as a forward for Real Madrid and he is captain of his national team Portugal. His contract with Real Madrid is for six years and is worth €11 million a year. The contract is also subject to a buy out agreement with a price tag of €1 billion.

Ronaldo was born in Santo Antonio, Madeira in 1985. His mother was a cook and his father a gardener. By the age of eight he was a keen footballer and by the time he was ten he signed with Nacional which is now in the Portuguese first division. He joined Sporting CP football academy where he was an outstanding performer.

During a match between Sporting CP and Manchester United which Sporting won, Ronaldo, then 18, was noticed by Alex Furguson who signed him for United for £12 million where he wore the famous number seven shirt. His career at United was outstanding and by May 2007 he had scored fifty goals for the team.

In that same year it was rumoured that Real Madrid offered United €80 million for him, but he signed for another five years with United. Under the new deal his wages were £480,000 a month, making him their top paid footballer. That season he scored a total of 42 goals.

The following season their was further speculation concerning Real Madrid, though Ronaldo again declined their offer and agreed to stay with United for another season. That year he was named FIFA World Player of the Year.

Eventually Alex Ferguson could hold on to him no longer and he accepted Real Madrid’s offer an Ronaldo debuted for them in July 2009.

Ronaldo has often been involved in controversial incidents and probably the most famous of these was in the 2006 World Cup. One of his Manchester United teammates was the firry Wayne Rooney. In a match between England and Portugal is seemed that Ronaldo had goaded Rooney and had complained about him to the referee. Eventually Rooney was red carded, a crucial decision, and Ronaldo was blamed by the England fans for precipitating the sending off.

This year Real Madrid is determined to regain their position from Barcelona of the top of La Liga; if the team is to be successful much will be expected from Ronaldo.
