Inter are hoping to use their Champions League match against Tottenham as a stepping stone to open up talks for Gareth Bale.

Sky Sport Italia and Il Corriere dello Sport report the champions are serious about signing the Welshman, and they are ready to ram home their message to Tottenham chiefs on Wednesday.

The two teams lock horns at San Siro, and Inter are hoping to get close to Bale and make enquries over his availability for the January transfer window.

Rafael Benitez is short of cover on the left flank. Cristian Chivu has looked poor this term, leaving his coach to field the inexperienced David Santon despite his lack of game time since an injury plagued spell lat term.

Bale would offer the perfect solution, but Inter face competition from Real Madrid, Milan and Chelsea, who are all said to be interested.

The Nerazzurri would also need a bale of cash. €20 million is the minimum bid to light the bundle of kindling. (

The timing of this reports says it all. If the information is accurate then this is an ingenious attempt to unsettle an opponent ahead of the big match at the San Siro tomorrow night and it it is not accurate then it is a good way to regurgitate a long running rumour.

Gareth Bale has been in sparkling form over the past year and has put any demons he had soundly to bed. Remember for quite some time the Welshman was being used as a pub quiz question due to the lack of a Premier League win in his many early appearances at Tottenham, but that has all changed now and he has become a wanted man.

Would Harry Redknapp sell? Almost certainly not. What if the White Hart Lane side didn’t nab a top four finish would the former Southampton man then be tempted by a move to the likes of Inter Milan? Quite possibly.
