ASHLEY YOUNG has called a dramatic halt to contract talks with Aston Villa.
The England winger, 25, told the club last night that he wanted to leave discussions over a new four-year deal until the end of the season.
He said: “I’ve told the people at Villa that I won’t be signing a new contract at the moment.
“I know they want to get it done now but my current deal still has a year to run after this season and I feel there is plenty of time to talk next summer.”
Yet Young insisted to SunSport his decision had nothing to do with being unhappy at Villa Park.
Young, a £9.65million buy from Watford in 2007, said: “I want to stress that I have no problem with Aston Villa.
“I love the fans and I’m very much enjoying my football.
“I want to concentrate on what’s happening on the field and don’t want to get distracted.
“It’s a big season for me and I’m hopeful there are good times ahead under the new manager.”
Young’s stance will be a blow to Gerard Houllier who has just taken over as Villa boss. (The Sun)
Seriously, is anyone buying this? The statement “I want to concentrate on what’s happening on the field and don’t want to get distracted” is a very badly disguised way to playing for time. If he wanted to concentrate on football then he would just sign a new deal and not stall on a contract. If he loves the fans and the club then why hold out on signing a new deal?
Clearly Ashley is waiting to see what happens this season under Gerard Houller, and probably also waiting to see who the club can attract in January and indeed if he himself can get a huge pay rise. That would all be fair enough, to an extent, but why does he have to insult the supporters intelligence by claiming he wants to concentrate on his football.
Young appears to rub many people up the wrong way and it seems fairly likely that if anyone comes in for him who happens to be higher up in the Premier League table the England international wouldn’t bat an eyelid and would be gone in a flash.
What do Villa fans make of the tactics deployed by the 25 year old?
