FC Schalke 04 centre-back Benedikt Howedes is reportedly back in Arsenal’s sights.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is believed to be a great admirer of the 22-year-old, despite some injuries in his career.

And the Italian Tutto Mercato Web site cites German sources as saying that after mulling a bid for the centre-back over the summer, the Arsenal manager is continuing to monitor the situation with great interest with a view to a future move for Howedes.

Howedes is a very tall and aggressive central defender, who is fast and very good in the air. He has useful versatility, too, having played as a defensive midfielder as a youth player and a full-back on both sides at senior level.

The Germany Under 21 star is contracted to Schalke until the end of the 2013/2014 season and is valued at €7.5M-10M. (IMScouting)

Even though Arsene Wenger has guided Arsenal back up to second spot in the Premier League following their impressive win at Eastlands yesterday it still appears he feels his side has something of a soft centre. The north London club’s clean sheet against ten man City was only their second of the league season and they have now conceded five times the amount of goals Chelsea have.

With that in mind it seems that Arsenal are still on the look out for new central defensive options and Benedikt Howedes may well be a good option to turn to. The young Schalke player has been a consistent performer over the past three seasons and helped his side to within touching distance of the Bundesliga title last term, however this season has not been quite so successful.

Felix Magath’s side sit third from bottom and this may make some of their stars consider moves away from the Gelsenkirchen and some reports still believe that Wenger covets the club’s keeper Manuel Neuer, even though Lukasz Fabianski has put in some stellar performances of late.

The Gunners boss has money to spend and will attempt to bring both players to the Emirates in January or failing that in the summer as he looks to strengthen his relatively weak back line.
