Newcastle United are ready to challenge Everton for the loan signing of Landon Donovan in January.

The Los Angeles Galaxy attacker is expected to be available in the New Year again after a successful three-month stint at Everton last season.

Newcastle hope to pip Everton to Donovan’s signature by wrapping up an early deal with both the player and the club over a January loan move.

“He is exactly the signing Newcastle need with Ben Arfa out with a long-term injury,” a Newcastle source told Goal.com UK.

“The boss is worried the team rely too much on Andy Carroll and Donovan has proven that he can hurt defences in the Premier League.

“It would work really well for the player because he will be guaranteed a game every week and for the club because those three months after Christmas will be vital – we want a mid-table finish.” (Goal.com)

Newcastle United have had a mixed start to the season – but so has practically every other team.

Their position of 9th with 11 points from nine games puts them well on target for survival, but they remain just two points above the drop zone.

With the table so congested at this early stage of the season, any sudden drop in form could quite easily see a side plummet down the table, which is why managers need a smart but frugal head in the transfer window come January.

Landon Donovan is clearly Premier League quality. As well as a successful international record, he proved himself well capable of adapting to the fast paced English league last season when on loan to Everton.

It would be a great signing for whatever team can get him – but Everton will surely have to be considered favourites having had him during the last campaign.
