Manager Carlo Ancelotti does not think that Didier Drogba will win the Ballon d’Or because Chelsea have not conquered Europe.
The Chelsea boss believes Inter Milan quartet Samuel Eto’o, Julio Cesar, Maicon and Wesley Sneijder are the favourites after an unprecedented Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble last season.
“Whoever wins the Ballon d’Or depends on the team the player plays for,” said Ancelotti, who saw his side defeat Blackburn in the Premier League on Saturday. “If you are not in the final of the Champions League it is very difficult to win it.
“Drogba won’t win it this season. If we win the Champions League this season we’ll have players able to win it. This time it will go to an Inter player.” (Sky Sports)
Ancelotti is most probably correct. Drogba is highly unlikely to win the Ballon d’Or this year, as though they dominated domestically Chelsea were not the best team in Europe. Similarly, Cote d’Ivoire did not win the World Cup – coming third in the famous Group Of Death behind Brazil and Portugal.
Whether he was right to declare his thoughts publicly is a different matter, but one would hope that Drogba does not see this as an affront to his sensitive ego.
While Ancelotti believes that an Internazionale player will win the coveted prize, media clamour in Spain is rooting for Xavi Hernandez of Barcelona, and given the tendency from the judges to be swayed by international performances in a major tournament, he has to be considered close to favourite alongside Sneijder.
