Roy Hodgson’s search for new attacking options has taken him to Germany where he has reportedly set his sights on Stuttgart targetman Russian Pavel Pogrebnyak. The Liverpool manager has admitted that he would like, if possible, to bring in up to six new players in January with the most crucial position to fill appearing to be the need to bring in extra firepower to the Merseyside club.

Stuttgart have had an awful start to the Bundesliga season and find themselves third from bottom a start that cost manager Christian Gross his job. Hodgson will hope that such a wretched campaign may help him lure either of their striking talents.

Despite the poor start to the season Pavel Pogrebnyak has managed to net five goals in seven games and at 26 has a great deal to offer. The rangy 6ft 3in striker could work well as a foil for Fernando Torres and help Liverpool become more of an attacking threat.

Thus far Hodgson has seen his side manage just ten goals in ten Premier League games, a statistic that reinforces the club’s need to not wholly depend on their Spanish star for their goal tally. A move for the former Zenit St Petersburg man would set Liverpool back around £12m.
