[Gerard] Houllier made a reference to taking Karim Benzema on loan. The former Lyon favourite would be on the Frenchman’s radar as Villa have been playing matches without a recognised striker.

Benzema is now scoring goals at Real Madrid and is currently featuring in Jose Mourinho’s plans. However, the self-proclaimed Special One is in hot pursuit of Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Llorente.

Villa’s boss added: ‘If Karim wants to come and play at Villa, we will take him tomorrow. We could give him playing time here.’ (Daily Mail)

Aston Villa are seriously struggling up front, with the bulk of their goals coming from their midfield. Karim Benzema has struggled to make an impression at Real Madrid, and the player once talked up as the Brazilian Ronaldo’s heir has spent much of this season either on the right wing or the bench.

An outstanding footballer on his day, with pace, power, fantastic technique and all Alan Hansen’s other favourite adjectives, Benzema would certainly thrive from the service from Ashley Young, Stewart Downing and Marc Albrighton – as well as from the imminent signing of Robert Pires. He could also aid the development of the likes of Nathan Delfouneso.

The only obstacle remains the player himself.

The outside impression is that Karim Benzema thinks of himself as a top player who belongs at one of the elite clubs in Europe – and that may well be the case at his best – but his career is currently in standstill. He might still occasionally be linked with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, but nothing has come out of these stories.

Villa Park might be his best chance to his career back on track.
