Aston Villa have signed former Arsenal winger Robert Pires on a six-month contract.
The 37-year-old was released by Spanish club Villarreal in the summer and was available as a free agent.
Pires could make his Villa debut at Blackburn on Sunday if the club receive international clearance.
“I can’t wait to play and put on that new shirt,” Pires told Villa’s website. “I am very happy to join Aston Villa because it’s a big club in England.”
Pires helped France win the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship as well as winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with Arsenal. (BBC Sport)

This is an interesting bit of news and could be interpreted in a number of ways. Some may say that Aston Villa do not trust in their own pool of attacking midfield talent and have to go to the lengths of pulling a player of advancing years to the club in a hope that the gamble may work. I think however it is far fairer to say that this was a calculated risk well worth taking.

The 37 year old has had a great spell at Villarreal up until the summer and is clearly still fighting fit, after all the Frenchman took part in 37 games last term for the La Liga side. He is experienced as hell and has proven himself in the Premier League. I fully expect the former Arsenal man to be a success and may well earn a longer deal when the season comes to a close. Expect a rousing round of applause as he is displayed to the Villa Park fans in their next home fixture as they ironically come up against Arsene Wenger and co.
