Having already signed Robert Pires, Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier is reportedly looking to sign another veteran star, former Brazil and Lyon midfielder Juninho Pernambucano.

Houllier knows the 35-year-old well from his time at Lyon. Juninho spent eight years at the French club, winning an amazing seven league titles. During that time, he built a reputation as an influential attacking midfielder and a dead-ball specialist, scoring 44 free-kicks out of his 100 goals for Lyon.

Juninho joined Qatari club Gharrafa in 2009 and has since helped them win the league title. He also has 40 Brazil caps to his name.

According to French radio station RMC, Houllier is considering offering Juninho a six-month contract at Aston Villa during the January transfer window.

Aston Villa have a very young squad, with multiple promising talents emerging all over the pitch.

Gerard Houllier has not been afraid to give the team’s youth a chance, but has found it necessary to bring in some experience to play alongside them.

Robert Pires is the first of those, and with Stiliyan Petrov only expected to return from his shoulder injury in February 2011, the need for another player in midfield is understandable.

Nevertheless, the Premier League is generally regarded as the fastest paced and most physical top flight in Europe, and supporters will inevitably be asking questions why their club is considering signing a player who is currently in the middle of a final payday in Qatar – no matter what his talent in his prime.
