Spanish youngster Suso has signed his first professional contract to keep him at Liverpool until 2013.
The forward – who can also play in midfield – put pen to paper after turning 17 on Friday.
The news will be welcomed by anyone who has watched the reserves this season, with Suso excelling against older and more experienced pros.
A highlight of his fledgling career to date came with a 25-yard belter against Newcastle Reserves.
Noted for his fine first touch and ability to pick out a pass, Suso featured briefly in our pre-season friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach and got his first taste of playing at Anfield in the second half of Jamie Carragher’s testimonial. (Liverpool Official Website)
Suso, whose full name is Jesús Fernández Sáenz, is clearly one for the future.
The young Spaniard has been capped at Under-17 level for his country, and there is hardly anyone better to learn from than his compatriot Fernando Torres.
Given that he can also play in attacking midfield, Steven Gerrard will hardly be a poor mentor either!
Our club has moved to a better youth policy in recent years, snapping up some of the brightest talents in Europe such as Jonjo Shelvey and Dani Pacheco, and I have high hopes for Suso.
Let’s just hope that he gets his chances in the first team in the coming seasons.
This is the main reason I am gutted we were knocked out the Carling Cup by Northampton – even more so than just the embarrassment.
A chance for these players to prove themselves would have done their development no harm at all, and perhaps Pacheco would actually be getting some game time.
I think we all have high hopes for him.
