Arsenal midfielder Denilson has set his sights on playing for Brazil after the Samba stars appointed a new manager.

Denilson, 22, is back in the Arsenal side after missing the opening month of the season because of a groin injury – and taking time to reach full match fitness.

But now he feels sharp and ready to aim high not just for club but also for country following the appointment of new Brazil boss Mano Menezes.

Denilson said: “I think everyone now has a chance of playing. I have to play here at Arsenal – and if I play five, six or 10 games together in a row then surely I have to go with Brazil because I’m playing for Arsenal at the top level.

“It’s my dream to play for Brazil – I saw Menezes talking on a Brazilian website saying there would be an opportunity for everyone, so I’m confident.

“But first of all I have to focus on playing, training and winning with Arsenal. If I do that then hopefully Brazil will come.” (talkSPORT)

Denilson is a bit of an enigma as a footballer.

Sometimes he can change a game for the better. When he replaced Jack Wilshere at half time against Everton at Goodison Park, he brought a calming influence to the side, and provided the killer pass to Marouane Chamakh which led to Cesc Fabregas’ goal.

Sometimes though, he can play with too little urgency, and ignore his duties.

In the very next match though, Tottenham’s first goal against Arsenal was partially the result of Denilson’s failure to track back, leaving space for Rafael Van Der Vaart’s run inside from the left and giving the Dutchman plenty of time to pick his pass.

The trouble is for Denilson that this is about as consistent as he gets.

Until he can improve his club form sufficiently enough to deserve the five, six, ten games he craves, the national team will remain a distant dream.

He will first need to back up the attitude he appears to show in this interview, and then in matches before he can hope for international recognition.
