Everton are monitoring the form of Porto midfielder Cristian Rodriguez – nicknamed ‘the onion’ because he has reduced his opponents to tears in the past.

Sources in Portugal claim the club have sent scouts to watch the Uruguayan in a number of games this season, including his appearances in the Europa League.

The 25-year-old is valued at around £7m and is under contract at Porto until summer 2012.

Rodriguez is often known by his nickname Cebolla, which means onion, as his pace and trickery have terrorised his opponents in the Portuguese league. (talkSPORT)

Manchester United fans will remember the above scene from the 1999 UEFA Champions League final, and we rather like the idea that Cristian Rodriguez leaves players in a similar predicament after every match.

The Uruguayan plays on the left wing, and is known for his speed and technical ability.

Though he has 38 caps for his country, he didn’t play in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa because he punched Gabriel Heinze in the final match of qualification. His subsequent four match ban meant that he was not considered for the tournament finals.

If David Moyes can curb this streak, he could have a fine player on his hands.
