Adam Johnson, Manchester City’s fleet-of-foot winger, is set to be a January transfer target for Liverpool.
Roy Hodgson is known to be a huge fan of the gifted 23-year-old and is keen to add him to the squad to keep Liverpool’s new-found momentum in the Premier League going.
Johnson said recently that he’s feeling disillusioned with life at Eastlands and that has put Hodgson on alert for a swoop.
Johnson said: ‘Every footballer has to think about it when the time comes,’ he said.
‘It is still early but I definitely would consider [leaving].’ (Metro)
While this would undoubtedly be a great signing for Liverpool, what the Metro don’t mention is the Adam Johnson quotes that later followed this interview on the Manchester City website.
“The first thing I thought, when you read something like that, is the fans will think I want to get away. That hurt, because I care more about what the fans think than what anybody else thinks.
“I think the fans understand that I just want to play. When I play I try to give 100 per cent every time, and I think that comes across in the way that I play. I’ve had a few texts, mostly light-hearted.
“I think the fans want me to be playing, but there’s a quality squad at this club and we all have to fight for our place. That’s how it is, and I have to accept that. But it’s great to have that rapport with our fans.
“I said something in a moment of frustration and things can get blown out of proportion. I am happy here. I love playing football more than anything, and I’d love to play in every game.”
Reading those, it sounds more like the England winger is caught in two minds than anything.
Should Adam Johnson not be receiving the playing time he craves by January – despite the gruelling Premier League Christmas schedule – he might well consider a move.
