Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has escaped with a fine and a one-game UEFA Champions League ban after being found guilty of improper conduct.

The Portuguese boss, who won last year’s competition with Inter Milan, has been sanctioned for his role in the controversial dismissals of Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos during Real’s Group G game against Ajax last week.

Mourinho has been banned from the touchline for two Uefa competition matches – the second of which is suspended for three years – with the club fined €120,000. (Sky Sports)

It does appear that UEFA has missed the point somewhat. Real Madrid deliberately got two players sent off so that they could have their previous cautions wiped out before the knock out stages of the Champions League, so what punishment did they get?

Well Jose Mourinho’s punishment now means he doesn’t have to attend the meaningless match against Auxerre, not much of a cross to bear given that the Real Madrid boss had made it clear that the game meant nothing to him. UEFA then failed to adequately punish players who deliberately sought to erase their previous cautions and surely therefore a suitable path to take would have been to suspend the players for the first knock out match?

Expect this to be a precedent and other teams may well seek to copy Real Madrid and UEFA will then be hamstrung when it comes to similar punishments.
