Arsenal ace Denilson does not see why the club cannot win everything they are playing for this season.
The Brazilian insists the club must keep their concentration, but does not see why they cannot end their trophy drought which dates back to 2005.
Denilson is in no doubt once that illusive first winners medal comes along, the rest will all swiftly follow.
“I think we can win it this season, and I want to win it this season because for five or six years we haven’t won any trophies, but now we are a little bit stronger than last season,” the 22-year-old Brazilian declared.
“Last season we lost some big games, and this season we are more experienced.
“We have a great team, we have young players, but quality as well.”
Denilson added: “If we focus on every single game we have a chance to win – not only the Carling Cup, but also the FA Cup, the Champions League and the Premier League, which are more important for us.” (Sky Sports)
In recent years, Arsenal have gained a reputation of being built up and failing to deliver at the end of the season – not least because of the need for a sensational approach from the media to gain headlines.
This time however, it is Arsenal themselves setting them up for a fall, or at least someone representing them.
Denilson was presumably provided a leading question by a journalist about which trophies Arsenal felt they could win this season.
He probably didn’t need to say all of them.
This is why footballers give clichéd answers about “just concentrating on the next match,” because as soon as one deviates from that default response, they get caught out.
Arsenal are favourites for the Carling Cup now, with Ipswich their semi-final opponents and either West Ham or Birmingham awaiting them in the final.
However, they have much to do if they are to prove they are serious contenders for other trophies – they have not even qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League yet.
One must admire Denilson’s optimism, but Arsenal have a long way to go yet.
