Tottenham and Fenerbahce are preparing for a transfer tussle to land Bordeaux’s cultured defender Michael Ciani.
Reports in France have revealed both clubs have been in contact with Bordeaux about a possible January swoop for the 26-year-old.
But club president Jean-Louis Triaud insists they will not let France international Ciani leave for less than £7m.
AS Roma are also understood to be interested in the centre-back but have not yet been in touch with Bordeaux about taking him to Serie A. (talkSPORT)
Tottenham haven’t kept a clean sheet in the Premier League since the opening day of the season against Manchester City, who have been surprisingly toothless this season – Carlos Tevez aside.
As evidence of that, Man City have had the fourth least shots in the Premier League, behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City.
However, Spurs have played the first two of those, conceding three goals in the process, and coincidentally play Birmingham in their next match.
It should be noted though that Harry Redknapp’s side won both their matches against Wolves and Blackburn with scores of 3-1 and 4-2 respectively.
Perhaps Redknapp’s policy of aiming to score more goals than the opposition is working then, but tightening things up at the back could do no harm.
Recently Younes Kaboul has looked impressive in central defence, while his current partner William Gallas is 33. It is doubtful whether either of these would be playing if Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King were fit, but their injury troubles are well documented, and Michael Dawson has also struggled for fitness this season.
Backup players in the position Sebastien Bassong and Vedran Corluka have only impressed on occasion, but nevertheless Tottenham Hotspur have a surplus of centre halves on their books, and some will presumably have to be sold if they are to move for the impressive Michael Ciani, who made his France international debut earlier this year.
