Aston Villa are ready to launch a multi-million pound bid for Rangers goalkeeper Alan McGregor in January – indicating that Brad Friedel’s days at Villa Park are numbered.

Villa manager Gerard Houllier indicated that he had sent both assistant manager Gary McAllister and his goalkeeping coach Rafael Gonzalez to Ibrox recently, and disclosed in a press conference that it was the Rangers number one he had them scouting.

“Yes we went to see [McGregor] play.

“I’m very happy with Brad [Friedel] but I’m conscious he is 39 and I’d be silly not to look to the long term.

“Obviously, he didn’t have a good game versus Blackburn but, since the start of the season, he’s been spot on.

“He’s got experience and I trust him. I think he’s a good goalkeeper, been a good buy.

“Long term, we need to prepare for the future. I need to see the reserve goalkeeper [Brad Guzan] as well.

Since then, Villa have accelerated their pursuit of a replacement for Brad Friedel, with Jason Steele of Middlesbrough, Tomas Kuszczak of Manchester United and Bolton’s Ali Al Habsi also on their list.

However, with the Rangers star on the market for just £2m according to the Daily Mirror due to the club’s financial woes, perhaps the Scottish goalkeeper might be the cheapest – and indeed best option for Aston Villa.
