The Stade Rennais are preparing themselves for the exit of their defender Rod Fanni.

The 29-year-old has been courted by Marseille and Liverpool in particular, and his future could be resolved very quickly indeed.

“A decision will be made within 48 hours,” asserted Peter Dréossi, general manager of Rennes, in L’Equipe on Tuesday.

While OM has made a right back their priority after the serious injury of Cesar Azpilicueta (ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee), Fanni could ultimately favour the English option.

The offer from the Reds is also greater than what the leaders Marseille are able to offer (€3 million), and fully satisfies the Breton club since it would avoid strengthening a direct competitor. (L’Equipe)

Of course, there is a case that now Liverpool have recruited sporting director Damien Comolli they are being linked with every player in France, but presuming L’Equipe’s story is true, the main question for Liverpool would be why sign another right back?

There are other areas of the squad which need strengthening, and they should be a far higher priority for Roy Hodgson than a position for which Liverpool already have cover.

Glen Johnson isn’t the greatest defender in the world, but he is a great attacking force when on top form. Behind him in the pecking order, Martin Kelly has shown excellent promise as a backup – even being linked with a first England call up – and to sign a 29 year-old would surely slow his progression.

Rod Fanni is a capable defender with UEFA Champions League experience, and at €3m (approx. £2.5m) would be a reasonable short term solution.

With a name like that though, he can’t be expected to sell many shirts…
