There has been a dreadful piece of reporting in the Boston Globe by a reporter named Alex Beam, who originally labelled the Hillsborough stadium disaster as a riot, Liverpool fans as “totally bonkers” and the city itself as “doggy”.

Separate lines include unnecessary personal attacks on club owner John W Henry and his wife Linda Pizzuti, as well as shallow mockery of the city’s boycott of the Sun newspaper.

It is completely unacceptable.

“None of those sane people are in Liverpool, however. Even by the deranged standards of European soccer, Red fans are totally bonkers. Their excitable Internet fan sites are still agonizing over a 21-year-old soccer riot that killed 96 people.”

The word ‘riot’ has since been replaced by ‘stadium disaster’ – citing a “reporting error” but the original submission from the journalist in question showed an appalling lack of taste.

“There are other worrisome facts: It’s impossible to imagine a high-gloss player-franchise, a la David Beckham and his appalling wife, moving to doggy Liverpool.”

Criticising the 2008 capital of culture and saying that no big name player would move there is poor conduct in the extreme, but it is the Hillsborough dismissal that pains the most.

I can only hope the Boston Globe sees sense and issues an official apology to Liverpool fans for this quite reprehensible and spiteful piece of work.

Alex Beam should hang his head in shame.
