Alan Pardew has formally been announced as Newcastle United manager.

The former Reading, West Ham, Charlton Athletic and Southampton boss has signed a 5-and-a-half year deal at St James Park, and will take the reigns for the first time against Liverpool on Saturday.

That seems quite a long deal – almost as if Pardew is anticipating a big payoff from being sacked.

Pardew told the official Newcastle website he was “privileged” to become Magpies boss, but it will take more than that to win over the fans, who never wanted his predecessor Chris Hughton to be sacked in the first place.

“I am honoured and privileged to have been given this opportunity at one of the truly great clubs in English football,” said Pardew.

“I’m not a Geordie, but I’m a football person with a love of the game.”

He will take over a side in a respectable 11th in the Premier League.
