Harry Redknapp is set to move for Inter Milan defender Davide Santon in January.

The 19 year-old full back is capable of playing on either side of the centre backs due to his strength with both feet, and is wonderfully capable in both defence and attack.

He made his European debut in March 2009 for Inter Milan against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League last 16. This meant his direct opponent was Cristiano Ronaldo, but had a brilliant game and kept the Portuguese winger quiet in a 0-0 draw.

After the match, Ronaldo himself was effusive in his praise.

“I was impressed by him – I enjoyed our match. There’s no doubt he is a really exciting talent and a great footballer.”

Jose Mourinho went even further.

“He’s a great player and in 10 or 15 years when he becomes the new [Paolo] Maldini or [Giacinto] Facchetti, with 200 or 300 Inter games under his belt, in that moment I’ll remember his debut.”

Unfortunately for Santon though, his career has stalled somewhat in the last year or so due to a niggly knee complaint, and he has lost his place in the team under Mourinho’s replacement Rafa Benitez.

Santon is fully fit now, and has denied rumours that he is set to move to Genoa.

While Harry Redknapp’s team was recently linked with Glen Johnson of Liverpool, he reportedly believes that Davide Santon would be a cheaper and better option at the back.

Still a teenager and with UEFA Champions League experience and six caps for Italy, the world is at Santon’s feet.

It would appear that is not the case with Rafa Benitez as manager, and it will be up to Redknapp to get the most out of him.
