Sergio Aguero has signed a contract extension until 2015 with Atletico Madrid to become the highest paid player at the club on €5.8 million per annum.

Sport.es and La Sexta report that the 22-year-old Argentinean striker reached an agreement with los Colchoneros over a new deal and extended his current contract until 2015.

His old deal was due to expire in 2012, but the club have moved early to secure his future.

For their part, Atleti have inserted a €60m buy-out clause to fend off interest from other clubs.

Aguero has been on Chelsea’s radar for a few years and it had been expected that he was to move to west London at some point in the near future. However, this latest development appears to have killed off any possibility of a transfer.

Diego Maradon’a son-in-law got only fleeting opportunities at the World Cup but he is Atletico Madrid’s star man and the true heir at the Vicente Calderon to Fernando Torres who has long since departed to Liverpool. When Chelsea enquired about him in 2009 they were quoted a price of £35m which dissuaded them from pursuing the matter but they were believed to be lining up another bid. Luckily for Atleti fans, he won’t be going anywhere
