West Ham are planning an audacious attempt to snap up Manchester United striker Michael Owen on a loan deal when the transfer window re-opens next month. Avram Grant has been looking closely at new attacking options and has earmarked a move for the 30 year old former England international who is close to a comeback after being out for the past for over two months.
The Upton Park club’s co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold have previously tried to bring the likes of David Beckham to the club and earlier this week the east London side attempted to bring Man City striker Emmanuel Adebayor to the club on a similar loan deal, a move that the player rejected.
Such is the Hammers desperation to find a solution to their attacking woes they will now ask Sir Alex Ferguson if they can take Michael Owen on a loan deal until the end of the season. The chances of the Man United boss accepting such a deal are slim, however it is fair to say that even a fully fit Michael Owen would not get much of a chance of a first team start at the club given that the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle United man is behind the likes of Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order.
Owen’s contract comes to an end in the summer and he may well feel that a successful stint in the Hammers first team may give him a better chance of sealing a new deal at Man United or heighten the chances of a decent offer from a new club when the season comes to an end.
West Ham sit rock bottom of the Premier League table and have managed just 16 goals in 18 Premier League matches so far this season.
