Roma are back in the hunt for Shay Given and would like to take the Manchester City goalkeeper on loan in January until the end of the season.
But the Italians face rivalry from at least one English club.
Whether City will be prepared to sanction a temporary or permanent move for the 34-year-old Irishman is unclear.
Given, who is on £100,000 a week, has expressed his dissatisfaction with being No 2 to Joe Hart at Eastlands and manager Roberto Mancini has said he would be willing to let him leave.
But the City hierarchy have not taken the same line and are unlikely to sell to another Barclays Premier League club.
In August, Roma, coached by former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, spoke about a £2million deal and also a possible swap arrangement.
Roma, who finished second to Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan in Serie A last season, are currently fifth in the table, four points off a Champions League place.
They have reached the last 16 of this season’ s Champions League and face Shakhtar Donetsk.

This may well be a move that suits all concerned. Roberto Mancini has been very honest in his treatment of the Irish international. The Man City boss has made it clear that Joe Hart is his number one and he would understand Given’s need to move on, however the Eastlands club steadfastly refuse to sell the 34 year old to a Premier League rival so perhaps a move to Italy would work best?
Roma have improved of late after an average start to the season and can consider themselves still in the hunt for the title despite being fifth spot. Claudio Ranieri’s side has one of the worst defensive records of the clubs in the top half of the table so is therefore keen on landing a keeper as solid and dependable as the former Newcastle United man.
