Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola is set to allow defender Gabriel Milito to leave the club in the transfer window.
It is thought that a move away from Spain on loan to England or Italy is on the card for Milito.
The Argentina international is still regarded as a top class defender, and was chased by Liverpool a number of times before moving to Barca in 2007, and could attract interest from the Merseysiders again.
Guardiola admitted that the decision was not made by the club, but the player himself due to wanting to keep his place in the national team.
“There are decisions that I make or the club makes but this one is exclusively his (Milito’s),” he said.
“Knowing him, I understand (his wish to leave).
“But I am not upset. It’s impossible to be upset with Gaby.
“Believe me, I have been a soccer player and I put myself in his shoes and I understand it.” (Sky Sports)
In 2007, Barcelona paid over €20m for Gabriel Milito’s services, and only the emergence of Gerard Pique and persistent injury trouble have kept him from living up to that price tag.
The news that he is available on loan for the second half of the season has pricked up the ears of Premier League clubs wanting a cheap and dependable option at the back.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has indicated he is considering entering the transfer market for a central defender should Thomas Vermaelen’s Achilles injury continue to perplex the club’s medical staff, while Damien Comolli has convinced Liverpool directors that a top class centre half available for six months for nothing could be a great asset irrespective of what manager is in place.
The Mirror today adds Blackburn Rovers to that list of interested clubs, as the team’s ambition to sign established players from top sides around Europe continues.
