Aston Villa will step up their bid to sign Joey Barton from Newcastle this week and could offer Nigel Reo-Coker in part-exchange.
Newcastle want the midfielder to stay and have opened talks over a new contract but Villa manager Gerard Houllier is desperate to halt his side’s slump and has identified Barton as the man to revitalise them.
Barton has been in outstanding form and Houllier believes the 28-year-old’s fiery temperament can be channelled to Villa’s benefit.
Barton’s representative Willie McKay said: ‘A lot of clubs have shown interest but Joey is very happy at Newcastle. His ambition is to play for England again and he should do as he is the best midfielder in the country at the moment.’
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew would be reluctant to lose Barton but cash plus his former West Ham charge Reo-Coker may prove persuasive. (Daily Mail)
I am not sure that this is a deal that Newcastle United will be interested in and it appears that the story only exists due to the fact that Nigel Reo-Coker played under Alan Pardew at West Ham, a combination that didn’t exactly work well as the former England Under 21 international was inconsistent and that added to West Ham’s woes and led to the sacking of Pardew.
Joey Barton is clearly something of a luxury player but whatever you think about his mentality the 28 year old does have the ability to make things happen and I don’t see the new St James’ Park boss accepting this deal.
Apart from anything else Nigel Reo-Coker has been something of a flop at Aston Villa, where during his three and a half years he has failed to make an impact and has become more well known for falling out with all and sundry.
