Brazilian forward Ronaldinho has joined Rio de Janeiro-based club Flamengo – ending any hope Blackburn had of signing the playmaker from AC Milan.
The 30-year-old, who joined Milan from Barcelona in 2008, had also been linked to Brazilian teams Gremio and Palmeiras but has signed a deal until 2014.
Blackburn boss Steve Kean conceded on Saturday the club’s hopes of signing Ronaldinho were “dead in the water”.
Rovers, who have new owners, had offered him a £20m three-year contract.
Flamengo president Patricia Amorim told the club’s official website: “We are pleased to announce the hiring of Ronaldinho for the next four years.” (BBC Sport)
So Blackburn Rovers miss out on the Brazilian legend, that is of course if they ever made an offer in the first place, something AC Milan have denied. The 30 year old has decided the time was right to return to Brazil and whilst one can understand how Ronaldinho may feel compelled to return home perhaps he has done so a tad early?
After all we are talking about a player who played the lions share of last term and did pretty damn well. He still had a lot to offer in Europe but I guess the fact that he has won everything that there is to win (and then some) made his decision to move to Flamengo that little bit easier.
