Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will bring in at least one of his three top targets this month – Gary Cahill, Per Mertesacker or Emir Spahic – after Thomas Vermaelen suffered another setback in his recovery from an Achilles injury.
The Belgium international has not played for the Gunners since August 28, after sustaining the problem while on international duty.
It was initially hoped the 25-year-old would be sidelined for weeks rather than months but complications mean the club cannot say when he will be ready to return.
Fellow centre-half Sebastien Squillaci is also out until next month after suffering a hamstring strain in Saturday’s FA Cup third-round draw with Leeds, which means 18-year-old Ignasi Miguel could feature in Wednesday’s Carling Cup semi-final, first leg with Ipswich at Portman Road.

‘Vermaelen had another setback on Saturday that we are concerned with,’ Wenger said.
‘We are consulting top specialists around the world. He has another check and we will know more on Wednesday.
‘Unfortunately, I can’t give you any precise date but I concede that with this little setback from Thomas we are in a situation where we will have to look around.’
Wenger has again been strongly linked with a transfer-window move for Bolton’s Cahill, while Montpellier’s Bosnia & Herzegovina international Spahic and Werder Bremen stopper Mertesacker are other rumoured targets. (Metro)
There are clearly pros and cons for all three of these centre back targets and Arsene Wenger knows he has to act fast to avoid missing out, after all he stated soon after the last transfer window that he would have liked another defensive options, implying that he realised he should have added to the additions of Sebastien Squillaci and Laurent Koscielny.
Of the three on offer Per Mertesacker appears to have made it clear he wishes to help steer Werder Bremen away from the drop zone and has no intention of leaving until the summer. Gary Cahill may cost a bit too much as cash strapped Bolton look to make the most from their prized asset. Which leaves Montpellier’s Bosnian international Emir Spahic as the more likely of the three.
The £8m rated 30 year old is a solid if not spectacular target who has been in good form for his Ligue 1 side, who have one of the best defensive records in France. Clearly given Spahic’s age it could well that he is only offered a short team deal, something that Wenger is known for doing, and that may not be quite what the Dubrovnik born centre back is after. He may feel a long term deal elsewhere may be more attractive than a high profile short term deal that could back fire.
