Aston Villa have turned down an offer for their star midfielder Stewart Downing from Sunderland, according to Sky Sports.
Downing, formerly of Middlesbrough, is thought to have been a target of Sunderland manager Steve Bruce for some time, however, after Villa’s latest shun it appears that the Black Cats’ boss will be forced to look elsewhere, with Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia thought to be an alternative target.
Former Newcastle winger N’Zogbia joined the Latics in 2009 but has been contuinously linked with a move away from the DW Stadium. (Goal.com)
Steve Bruce appears to be on a mission to add some creativity to his Stadium of Light attack and having already previously been linked with an attempt to sign Man City winger Adam Johnson on a loan deal, Sunderland made a move to sign Aston Villa’s Stewart Downing, a move that appears to have failed. The England international, who cost the Midlands side £12m in the summer of 2009, has been one of the few bright spots on a hugely poor season for the club.
The Black Cats have now turned their attentions to Wigan wide man Charles N’Zogbia but that may well be a move that Bruce should avoid as the Frenchman is hugely overrated and constant fails to deliver and his wage demands are apparently quite outrageous, a fact that saw Birmingham City withdraw their interest in the 24 year old.
