John W Henry is set to spend 10 days in the UK as Fenway Sports Group step up their bid to return Liverpool to the top echelon of English football.
The first match that the American owner took in back in October was the 2-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park in which Liverpool were thoroughly outplayed, and appropriately he will see how much his team have improved since then when the Merseyside derby again takes place on Sunday.
With Liverpool a completely different side at Anfield, there may well be grounds for optimism, but caretaker boss and club legend Kenny Dalglish knows that his side lack confidence at present.
“The effort, commitment and desire is there,” said the Scot.
“But sometimes it doesn’t matter how good the player is, you need belief. We’ll work hard on giving them that.”
John W Henry is expected to discuss potential transfer targets with Dalglish and club Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli, but Dalglish believes there is still talent in the Reds’ ranks.
“I have not spoken to Damien or the owners about new players,” he said.
“They gave me a squad of players to work with and I said thank you very much.”
While clearly one of the issues with Liverpool is confidence, the fact that there is so little pace on the flanks is a cause for concern, and Liverpool’s top transfer targets have to be at left back and on the wings.
A positive result in the Merseyside derby could show that Liverpool are finally on the right track – and may make John W Henry more likely to get out his wallet.
