Arsenal are close to agreeing a £5million deal for Southampton youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Manager Arsene Wenger has moved swiftly to head off interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United in the 17-year-old.
Arsenal have a strong relationship with Southampton after signing Theo Walcott in 2006 and the Oxlade-Chamberlain transfer will be similar.
They paid £5m for Walcott with another £7m based on appearances and England caps.
Southampton are still negotiating but hope to achieve £10m for Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the player staying on loan for the rest of the season. (Daily Mail)
It had looked like Arsenal were being beaten to the punch with regards to Southampton’s latest young starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but apparently, according to this source, a deal is practically in place to bring the attacking midfielder to the Emirates.
If indeed Arsene Wenger does sign the 17 year old then you couldn’t really blame the talented youngster for opting for a move to the North London club, after all he is likely to get more of a chance to shine at an early age than anywhere else, however there is of course one danger.
The Gunners have a great many up and coming talents and it can be hard to make yourself seen among such a talented bunch. This issue has led to many quality players leaving after a prolonged period of inactivity in order to try to salvage their careers.
The likes of Fran Merida, Fabrice Muamba, Sebastian Larsson and many others have left trying to find first team football and the current first team squad members Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela may have to think about doing likewise, such is the competition for places at the club.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been in great form this season and clearly it was important that any potential deal to sign the Saints man would have involved his staying at St Marys’ this season to help them try to secure promotion to the Championship.
