Arsene Wenger will decide this week whether to bid for Christopher Samba or Gary Cahill.
The Arsenal manager has publicly acknowledged that his central defence needs strengthening – and Samba and Cahill have been identified as the two main targets.
Cahill has been in impressive form for Bolton this season and managed Owen Coyle has put a £25million price tag on the head of the man who has forced his way into the plans of England manager Fabio Capello this season.
If a fee of around £15m can be negotiated, Wenger would be interested.
Samba, a Congo international, has said that he would welcome the chance to play at one of the top clubs.
He was signed for Blackburn by Mark Hughes for a bargain £500,000 in 2007.
He has emerged as one of the most powerful central defenders in the Premier League and at £10m would be well within cash-conscious Wenger’s price range. (Sunday Mirror)
A lot could depend on just how badly Arsene Wenger wishes to bring in centre back this month because it appears that as usual January purchases can tend to cost a great deal more than in the summer, mainly due to selling clubs realising the apparent desperation of those who wish to buy mid-season.
Both Gary Cahill and Christopher Samba are solid defenders who could add much needed strength in depth to the Gunners back line but both Bolton and Blackburn Rovers are not willing to sell on the cheap and we all know how reticent Arsene Wenger is to splash the cash.
With continuing injury concerns over the likes of Sebastien Squillaci and Thomas Vermaelen Arsenal have had to trust to the combination of Laurent Koscielny and Johann Djourou for the last three Premier League matches and to be fair to the pair, the Emirates side have kept clean sheets in each game, but that doesn’t appear to have blunted Wenger’s intention to bring in reinforcements.
