Arsenal have been encouraged by Bolton to make a £20million bid for England defender Gary Cahill this month.
Wanderers signed David Wheater from Middlesbrough yesterday on a free transfer with manager Owen Coyle insisting his arrival would not signal Cahill’s departure.
But Standard Sport understands the Gunners have now been told to make an offer, which meets Bolton’s valuation, during this transfer window having originally being informed they would have to wait until the summer to land their top defensive target.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is thought to be pondering a £10m opening bid for the 25-year-old as he searches for cover following Thomas Vermaelen’s surgery on an Achilles injury which will sideline him for at least six more weeks.
Sebastien Squillaci is due back from a hamstring problem before the end of the month but Wenger is understood to view Cahill as the long?term solution to the Gunners’ defensive frailties.
Wenger said today: “I think Gary Cahill is a very good player, but I cannot tell you more. We like to keep our transfer negotiations very secret because it puts more pressure on when you go public so you would understand we don’t want to speak publicly about that.”

The rumours circulating over the past 24 hours appear to suggest that Arsenal are ready to put in an offer of around £20m for England international Gary Cahill, a fee that will be the highest the club has paid for a player but it seems that Arsene Wenger is desperate to land a quality centre back and the Gunners boss feels that the Bolton man may be the best option open to him.
Some sources suggest that a significant portion of any fee paid for the 25 year old will be tied into increments related to appearances. Cahill has been a very consistent performer at the Reebok for the best part of 18 months and interest in his services has come from a number of Europe’s elite including Real Madrid and Chelsea.
Clearly the Arsenal boss feels that with his side fighting on four fronts he needs to sign another defender as he currently only has two recognised centre back as his disposal in Laurent Koscielny and Johann Djourou.
Wenger is very keen to bring in further defensive options following injuries to Thomas Vermaelen and Sebastien Squillaci and has been linked with a number of potential signings but it seems that former Aston Villa man Cahill is top of the club’s wish-list.
